电影《发胶明星梦》的歌曲
舞台與電影同樣有的，包括它的歌曲、舞蹈、對白、場景、人物性格，所以基本上的戲劇形式是接近的。但如何將它拍成電影，既能維持原有的情節與劇情，又能運用電影本身的媒體特性，將一個「舞台劇」成功創造出一部新的「歌舞片」？就是功力的差別了。電影以鏡頭捕捉影像，而非如舞台是在一個固定的空間做表演，鏡頭的距離遠近、時間長短，完全可以「控制」觀眾所看到的東西；再加上鏡頭剪接之間造成的無限魔法，都能讓原本故事裡相同的情境，產生出更豐富的意涵。從這個角度來看待《髮膠明星夢》，它確實比這兩年的同類型電影，要來得出色許多。《髮膠明星夢》最早的版本，其實是1988年，由Ｂ級片教父級人物約翰華特斯（John Waters）執導的電影《Hairspray》，後來才被重新編寫、配上歌舞，改編成走紅英美的歌舞劇。然後在去年，又以歌舞劇的版本為基礎，再重拍成了現在看到的這個最新的2007年的電影版本。三個階段的改編過程中，故事上幾乎大同小異，同樣是以巴爾的摩為背景，描寫高中生胖妹崔西意外成為歌舞選秀節目中的新寵，並愛上節目裡的另一個帥哥男孩林克，也因此得罪了原本與男孩配對的嬌嬌女安珀，以及她那嫌貧愛富的母親。當年約翰華特斯的版本裡最大的噱頭，就來自於他請了一向都常在他的電影裡「男扮女裝」的演員Divine，扮演片中女主角崔西的那個肥媽。Divine誇張的身材、骨架和男性化的嗓音，為這個肥媽一角增添更多獨特「笑」果；也造成後來幾乎這個角色彷彿有種不明文規定，非得要男扮女裝才行。《髮膠明星夢》電影新版，則請來人高馬大的約翰屈伏塔（John Travolta）扮演此角，不過比起當年Divine稍微比較潑辣和搞笑的表現方式，約翰屈伏塔的版本评论
